A waterfall is a place where water flows over a vertical drop in the course of a stream or river. Waterfalls are commonly formed when a river is young. At these times the channel is often narrow and deep. When the river courses over resistant bedrock, erosion happens slowly, while downstream the erosion occurs more rapidly. As the watercourse increases its velocity at the edge of the waterfall, it plucks material from the riverbed. Whirlpools created in the turbulence as well as sand and stones carried by the watercourse increase the erosion capacity. This causes the waterfall to carve deeper into the bed and to recede upstream. Often over time, the waterfall will recede back to form a canyon or gorge downstream as it recedes upstream, and it will carve deeper into the ridge above it. The rate of retreat for a waterfall can be as high as one and half meters per year.

A bamboo church was constructed by Franciscan Father Saro where people could gather for catechesis and worship in 1676. The bamboo church was replaced by a church of stone more than half a century later, in 1733, and it was around this time that the parish is said to have welcomed the patron for their church and community-St. Michael the Archangel, protector of the people and of the land. The devotion to St. Michael is so strong to this day that the municipality of Jalajala is practically synonymous to St. Michael.

Bahay na bato (Tagalog, literally "house of stone") is a type of building originating during the Philippines' Spanish Colonial Period. It is an updated version of the traditional bahay kubo. Its design has evolved throughout the ages, but still maintains the Bahay kubo's architectural basis which corresponds to the tropical climate, stormy season and earthquake prone environment of the whole archipelago of the Philippines and fuses it with the influence of Spanish colonizers and Chinese traders. Thus created was a hybrid of Austronesian, Spanish and Chinese architecture. Its most common appearance is that of an elevated overhanging wooden upper story Nipa hut (with balustrades, ventanillas and capiz shell sliding windows) that stands on Spanish style solid stone blocks or bricks and posts as foundation instead of just wood, bamboo stilts or timber posts.

“Previously made from light materials, it was constructed by Franciscan missionaries near the Laguna Bay in 1579. It was separated as the church of Santa Ana de Sapa in 1583. It was transferred to its present location by Father Pedro Chirino in 1591 and the town was named San Jose del Monte. It was the first stone church outside of Manila. The second larger stone-church, as it is right now, was rebuilt by Father Juan de Salazar in 1630. The roof of the church was destroyed by a strong typhoon in 1632. It was repaired under the Secular in 1768, and under the Augustinian Recollects in 1864. It was again burned during the Filipino-American War in 1899. It was expanded to sustain the growing population during the early years of 1970’s.”
